The Pre-Race Checklist
1. Design & Meaning
What design or concept do you want?
What does it mean to you (if anything)?
Are there particular symbols, elements, or details that matter most?
Do you want it to be realistic, abstract, traditional, minimalist, etc.?
Are there must-have or must-avoid colors?
Do you have reference images or inspiration photos ready to share?
Does this artist have examples of similar work they have executed before?
2. Placement & Size
Where on your body will the tattoo go?
Is it visible year-round or easy to cover if needed?
Do you plan for future tattoos nearby (sleeve, back piece, etc.)?
How large should it be (in inches or relative size — e.g., “palm-sized”)?
Vertical or horizontal orientation?
Will the placement be in a location that may require some personal privacy? This will be important to communicate.
3. Budget & Timing
What is your approximate budget for this piece?
Are you open to multiple sessions if needed?
Do you have a deadline (special event, trip, etc.)?
Do you understand that a deposit will be required and is non-refundable but transferable with notice?
4. Artist & Style Preferences
Have you reviewed the artists’ portfolios to choose who fits your style?
Are you open to your artist interpreting or redesigning your idea?
Are you aware that copying another artist’s exact tattoo is not allowed?
If using reference images, are they for inspiration, not duplication?
Have you mentioned if you want black & grey, color, or a mix?
Before you submit to being ready to get your tattoo with one of the Wing & Wheel’s Crew - be sure you have the answers to these questions:
5. Health & Skin Considerations
Are you 18 or older with valid ID?
Are you currently sick, pregnant, or breastfeeding? (If yes, reschedule.)
Do you have allergies (especially to latex, metals, adhesives, or inks)?
Do you have skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, sunburn) in that area?
Are you on blood thinners or medications that affect healing?
Have you eaten and hydrated properly before your session?
6. Aftercare Awareness
Do you understand how Second Skin or bandaging will be used?
Do you have unscented, gentle soap and moisturizer ready at home?
Do you know to avoid pools, hot tubs, and direct sun for 2 weeks?
Do you have SPF 30+ sunscreen for healed tattoos to prevent fading?
Do you understand the importance of not picking, scratching, or soaking the tattoo during healing?
Are you aware of color-enhancing or tattoo-safe moisturizers to maintain vibrancy long-term?
7. Removal, Cover-Up, or Touch-Up Plans
Is this a new tattoo, a cover-up, or part of an ongoing piece?
If a cover-up, have you discussed lightening or removal options first?
Do you understand that removal typically takes 6–12 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart?
Are you aware of the cost range ($100–$600+ per session depending on size)?
Have you planned to return for a free or discounted touch-up if needed within 3 months?
8. Mindset & Etiquette
Do you trust your artist and their creative judgment?
Are you ready to sit still, stay calm, and follow instructions during the session?
Do you understand that friends or guests may not always be allowed during your appointment?
Do you know to arrive on time (preferably 10–15 minutes early)?
Are you ready to treat the studio, artists, and equipment with respect?
Optional but Helpful to Know
Have you asked about the shop’s touch-up policy?
Do you know whether the artist offers custom design previews?
Have you considered UV protection, skin tone, and placement longevity for your tattoo choice?
Have you reviewed the artist’s previous work to know that they can execute your idea in a format or style in which they currently work in? You shouldn’t ask an artist like Monet to make you a something like Picasso, any more than you would ask a race car engineer to make a Chevy run like a Honda.
