Tattoo Aftercare Guide
Your tattoo is a hand-built piece of art, crafted with precision, tuned with intention, and meant to go the distance. Proper aftercare keeps your lines crisp, your colors bold, and your healing process smooth from the first mile to the last.
This guide walks you through everything you need to know for the first 24 hours, the first week, and the months ahead.
What To Expect After Your Tattoo
Every fresh tattoo goes through three phases:
1. Early Protection (First 24–48 Hours)
Your tattoo may feel warm, look red, or lightly “weep” plasma. This is normal.
2. Peel Phase (Days 3–10)
The tattoo will flake or peel like a sunburn. Do not pick or scratch.
3. Settle & Strengthen (Weeks 2–4)
The outer layer heals first, but your tattoo continues strengthening beneath the surface for several weeks.
If You Leave With Second Skin
How To Care for Second Skin
Wear the first piece for 24 to 48 hours, unless it fills with fluid sooner.
If it becomes overly full or lifts at the edges, remove it early.
Wash your hands before touching the area.
To remove: Peel slowly from the top corner down, not straight off the skin.
After removal, begin the “Daily Washing & Moisturizing” steps below.
If You Leave Without Second Skin
If your tattoo is wrapped with a traditional bandage:
Keep it covered for 2 to 4 hours after your appointment.
Wash hands.
Remove the bandage gently.
Begin the “Daily Washing & Moisturizing” steps below.
How To Wash Your New Tattoo
Washing is the most important step in clean healing.
Washing Instructions (Days 1–14)
Wash hands thoroughly.
Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, dye-free soap.
Clean gently—do not scrub.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel or air dry.
Let the tattoo breathe for 10–15 minutes before applying moisturizer.
Avoid:
Hot water
Scrubbing
Loofahs, washcloths, sponges
Creams with alcohol, heavy fragrances, or petroleum
Moisturizing & Ointment
Once the tattoo begins feeling tight or dry:
Use a thin layer of:
Unscented lotion (Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or artist-approved product)
Apply 1–2 times a day, not more
Too much moisture = irritation, pimples, clogged pores, or delayed healing.
What Not To Do While Healing
For at least 2 to 3 weeks, avoid:
Swimming (pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs)
Heavy sweating directly on the tattoo
Sun exposure
Tanning beds
Scratching or picking
Tight clothing that rubs
Applying heavy ointments or scented lotions
Sleeping face-down on a fresh tattoo
Think of your tattoo like a freshly painted car panel—protect it from friction, sun, and contamination.
The Peel Phase: Normal vs. Not Normal
Normal

Itching
Dull or cloudy appearance
Light scabbing
Temporary tightness
If anything looks concerning, contact us right away.

Long-Term care
Your tattoo will remain brighter and more defined if you:
Use sunscreen every time your tattoo sees the sun
Moisturize regularly
Avoid excessive tanning
Get occasional touch-ups when needed
Keep your skin healthy and hydrated
Americana and traditional tattoos are built for longevity - taking great care of them keeps them iconic.
